Print journalism placements

Print and online journalism placements in Tanzania

The media in Tanzania was once small and largely state controlled until the mid 1990’s when the advent of multi party politics opened the way for private media. As a result, the media in Tanzania is still relatively young, which gives you the opportunity to make a real impact and gain some valuable experience.

You’ll be working at one of our partner publications based in Arusha. Our main partner is one of the relatively new newspapers launched in the mid 1990’s. Produced weekly in English, the publication has a circulation of over 10,000 copies and is distributed not only all over Tanzania but also the neighbouring countries of Kenya and Uganda. The publication covers a wide variety of local news from in and around Arusha, as well as other stories from around Africa so you will be reporting on a wide variety of subjects from local events and sports, to national and African news.

You will have the opportunity to be involved in different activities at the newspaper. These include photography, proof reading and advertising in addition to writing features and reviews. You will also have the opportunity to become involved in producing the layout of the publication and the newspaper’s website.

Combining projects

The print media projects can be combined with the radio and / or TV broadcast media placements in Arusha. We recommend at least a month on each placement.
